Getting published with Y Lolfa

Y Lolfa is an independent printing and publishing company with a 40 year track record of producing attractive, popular and sometimes groundbreaking books in Wales. There are many reasons for our success. Certainly one is the fact that we have our own printing works and bindery here in Talybont. This means we can micro control all aspects of book design and production – and reprint quickly and cheaply!

We have, by now, almost 500 authors on our books and we take pride in the good relations we have with our authors and the professional way we deal with with all royalties, grants and copyright payments, which are paid twice a year.

This website (and also our paper catalogue – click here for a free copy) will give you a good idea of the range of books we publish in English. The main categories are:

1. Short, attractive, informative book for visitors to Wales written from an independent, Welsh standpoint
2. Books for Welsh learners
3. Books of Welsh interest for the local market, mainly: humour, local history, rugby, Welsh cookery, out-and-about Welsh guides
4. Popular autobiography by prominent figures (e.g., Chris Needs, Roberto Martinez)
5. Popular fiction, again usually with a Welsh dimension. (For literary fiction, we have the Alcemi imprint – please click the Alcemi logo, on the left here.)
6. Some original children's books with a Welsh appeal – no adaptations!

In the first instance, please contact our General Editor, Lefi Gruffudd (lefi@ylolfa.com), ideally via email. If your proposal is of interest, we will then need:

1. A summary of the book: a contents page or a synopsis written on an A4 sheet
2. The length in words
3. One sample chapter (on paper, not disk)
4. List of any pictures/diagrams required

If we think your book is worth considering, we will ask for a full copy of the work, if available, and then discuss it at our next Editorial Board Meeting. If the Board agrees to publish, we will then send you some technical advice for presenting the finished book, plus of course a Publication Agreement. Please remember that, even for straightforward books, the whole publishing process, including editing, book design and page proofing, grant application and marketing, not to speak of actual book production, can take at least a year.

A proportion of our books receive grant aid (mainly via the Welsh Books Council), but most of our English-language books do not. We have to satisfy ourselves that these books will pay their way commercially. This is not a problem with, for example, books for the tourist trade which sell via the 100 or so spinners we have all over Wales. But there are certain types of books (e.g., local history, personal autobiography) that may be well written and entertaining, and have an appeal for a certain market, but where we would be unlikely to fully recover our costs.

For this type of book we may invite an author contribution to the production costs, in exchange for an attractive Publication Agreement whereby we pay the author a larger than usual royalty, plus a commitment to keep in print. These books are published under the normal Lolfa imprint and marketed in the usual way. Our General Editor will give you full details.

We look forward to hearing from you and we will be happy to give you all the advice you need. You will be in safe hands and you will benefit fully from any success your book will get in the market.
